Although the emergence of contaminated sites is an old problem dating back to the Industrial Revolution, it was only recognized in 1970s when incidents increased public concern. Today, it is estimated that the number of contaminated sites exceeds 500,000 in the USA, 30,000 in Canada, 500,000 in Japan and 250.000 in European Union, while there are no available data for several other areas such as Eastern Europe and South America and for countries such as China and India. Taking into consideration that remediation of contaminated sites will be among the environmental issues that human society will be forced to successfully address in the near future, the Organizing Committee of the International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology is dedicating a session to the subject: "Remediation of contaminated sites”. A number of selected papers that will be presented in this session will be published in a special issue of “Waste management and research”, after the customary peer review process of the journal has taken place. Therefore, it is pleasure for us to invite you to Athens in September 2013 to present your work on this topic.
