Coastal zones are among the most productive areas in the world, enjoying high ecological and economic value as they sustaining the transport, trade, tourism and leisure sectors. This intensive concentration of anthropogenic activities in coastal zones has resulted to marine pollution. Over 80% of all marine pollution originates from land-based sources which are primarily industrial, agricultural and urban. Pollution accompanies most kinds of human activities, including offshore oil and gas production and marine oil transportation.Coastal zones are also among the most vulnerable areas to climate change. Risks include flooding, erosion, sea level rise as well as extreme weather events. These impacts are already changing in some regions the lives and livelihoods of coastal communities. Climate experts emphasize the importance of adapting to these potential effects of climate change by developing and implementing coastal protection and adaptation strategies. In this session particular problems concerning both coastal vulnerability due to climate change and marine pollution with emphasis in oil spills, on a global, regional and local scale are expected to be addressed.
